A hard-edged attitude to wildlife conservation
Article Abstract:
Head of Kenya Wildlife Service, Richard Leakey, has held this post before and sought to tackle poaching through harsh measures, which have been effective. Conservationists are concerned about the coexistence of humans and animals and Leakey is in the camp that believes that self-interest alone will not protect wildlife. The government backs his efforts because wildlife attract tourists. A plan to clear the Tana river of people is controversial, though benefits such as funds for water supplies, schools and clinics are on offer.
