A heated dispute in China: U.S. boiler maker fights partner over company patents
Article Abstract:
US boiler maker Slant/Fin Corp has filed charges against Da Wei Zhang in New York and China for allegedly improperly obtaining company patents and trademarks. It also lodged another administrative case in China against Zhang for counterfeiting its boilers. The relationship between Slant/Fin and Zhang began in 1996 when the latter proposed a joint venture that will sell boilers to the Chinese market. Through Zhang, the company sold 100 boilers in the first year of the venture worth $1 million and which comprised 2.5% of Slant/Fin's total sales for the period. The case reflects the growing prominence of disputes over intellectual property rights, as China works toward garnering US support for its World Trade Organization membership.
