Rubble rousers: razed hotel sparks row over future of Penang's heritage buildings
Article Abstract:
The Penang Heritage Trust is trying to preserve the architectural heritage of the Malaysian island. There are 12,000 pre-war buildings in Penang and they offer an exciting mixture of eastern and western styles. The publicity over the destruction of the Hotel Metropole in Dec 1993 resulted in a heritage advisory committee. The rent-control legislation has ensured that owners have not altered their property but it has also led to neglect. Although several temporary solutions have been suggested, educating the people is likely to be the most effective.
