A better life
Article Abstract:
Brazil has a number of social problems, some arising from recession, such as unemployment, and others which are longer standing, such as rural underdevelopment, murders of street children, and mistreatment of native peoples. Crime has risen with unemployment, drug consumption and urbanization. Funding for education has tended to go toward university students rather than primary education, where it is needed, but this is changing and the proportion of children in school is increasing. The government is tackling other issues, such as land reform.

A plot of our own
Article Abstract:
A land reform project has been trialed in four states in Brazil and is to be extended to the country as a whole. The aim is to settle some 2.5 million landless peasants more rapidly. An agreement between the World Bank and Brazilian government will help provide funding for the families involved. Rural families can move from being sharecroppers to being their own bosses, though they have to repay loans for purchasing the land. Landless families can themselves select the land, unlike a previous scheme where it was allocated to them.
