A hundred pages bloom: China discovers the Web - and the censors fret
Article Abstract:
China-oriented sections of the Internet abound, albeit with little organization, and national authorities fear objectionable information may prove impossible to block. While only 5,000 or so mainland Chinese now have Internet accounts, that figure may grow 10-fold by 1997 and could approach millions by 2001. ChinaNet now offers commercial access within China, though it is costly at $70 for 40 hours per month. Chinese characters once posed an obstacle, but online users have devised fixes.

Formosa fin-de-siecle
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese short story and screenplay writer Zhu Tian-wen was once labeled a neo-traditionalist, producing nostalgic works about old China, but her current creations show a more realist and nativist attitude. The realities of life in Taiwan have caused a merging of artistic traditions with the real world serving as inspiration, as evidenced in Zhu's 1990 collection of short stories depicting urban life in modern-day Taipei.
