The New York Stock Exchange is celebrating its bicentennial year in 1992, but the NYSE's loss of market share to both foreign and domestic competitors tempers the celebration. The exchange's prospects for future success are hindered by its failure to embrace new equity trading technologies.

The economic crisis in Asia has shaken confidence in the rapidly expanding global capital markets, and the issue is certain to be discussed at the April 1998 meeting of the International Monetary Fund. The need for banking reform and other issues are discussed.
