A life of its own: would a liberalized Japan have room for its postal bank?
Article Abstract:
Financial liberalisation in Japan would make it difficult to justify a national Postal Savings System competing with private banks, although the Yucho savings scheme continues as the government's easiest source of capital. However the promised financial Big Bang letting markets allocate capital is at odds with the postal savings scheme, which lets the state manage savings, diverting capital away from better uses. Private banks in Japan will benefit from privatisation and they regard Yucho advantages as unfair.

New territory
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong is densely populated but does offer residents opportunities to escape its urban congestion including the colony's New Territories. This region is adjacent to China's Guangdong province and has a number of pleasant hiking trails, the best known of which is the MacLehose Trail. Most expatriates in Hong Kong would be surprised to see that villages of the New Territories are in fact quite rural and full of surprises.
