Foreign banks invited to sponsor Japanese offering
Article Abstract:
The Japanese Ministry of Finance has invited several foreign investment banks to submit their offers for underwriting Japan Tobacco Inc.'s planned $2.44 billion share offering. Observers noted that this was the first such invitation extended to foreign securities companies. In past privatizations, the Japanese government preferred to sell equity offerings directly through auctions or distributed them through Japanese securities companies.

Japan market likely to ignore political ballyhoo
Article Abstract:
National elections in Japan are generally not seriously considered by investors and securities experts because the same kind of coalition government has existed year in and year out in the country. Politicians' promises of reform mean nothing more than more deregulation. Prime Min. Ryutaro Hashimoto is expected to retain his position. The stock market remains unaffected as the date of elections approaches.
