Pawar over-powered: Rao banishes defence minister to his home state
Article Abstract:
Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao ordered Defence Min Sharad Pawar to go back to his hometown Maharashtra and reassume his post as chief minister due to the town's politicalinstability. Pawar reportedly obeyed reluctantly and with the condition that Rao make a public statement that Pawar was just forced to return to the town upon his orders and that he was obeying like a good soldier. This was done by Rao after a supporter's disclosure on Feb 20, 1993 that Pawar was planning to overthrow him.

India's Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh has publicly criticized Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and the ruling Congress party for their indecision and inaction regarding the demolition of the Ayodhyamosque by Hindu revivalists last Dec 6, 1992. Furthermore, the Indian press hasbeen behind Singh in criticizing Rao for being soft on the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
