China, Taiwan vie for support of Chinese in North America
Article Abstract:
The first negotiations between China and Taiwan have led both sides to renew their efforts to win the support of Chinese communities in Canada and the US. China and Taiwan view the talks differently, and each wants to persuade the overseas Chinese that its view is correct. China argues that the talks were the first step toward reunification, while Taiwan discounts that idea in favor of settling practical matters. Overseas Chinese communities are similarly split into factions. Taiwan wants their support to bolster its international standing, while China regards them as sources of investment.

Indonesian-Chinese mobilize
Article Abstract:
Ethnic-Chinese in Indonesia have formed the Indonesian Chinese Reform Party and they are entering the political stage. Ethnic-Chinese were not encouraged to do so under Suharto. President Habibie is keen to encourage some of the 100,000 ethnic-Chinese who fled during the riots to return because they are essential to Indonesia's economic revival. Other steps which would help would be to remove the ban on Chinese newspapers and schools. Chinese people need to demonstrate an allegiance to Indonesia rather than to China.

Taiwan responds to China: but Lee's speech shows the gulf is as wide as ever
Article Abstract:
Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's recent response to Jiang Zemin of China reveals the great gap between the desires and intent of the two sides. Mainland China seeks to bring Taiwan into the People's Republic of China, while reunification to the Taiwanese means recognizing a cultural and geographical entity. Taiwan insists that Beijing renounce the use of force regarding it, but China considers that threat its only true hold on the island.
