A new proxy war: foreign powers again feeding arms to factions
Article Abstract:
Foreign countries are supplying military aid to opposing groups in Afghanistan who are preparing for a war that may affect the spread of Islamic fundamentalism. Iran, Russia, India, and Tajikistan are supporting President Burhanuddin Rabbani, while Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and various Arab countries are supporting the Islamic fundamentalist militia Taliban. Iran may have received American-made missiles in return for support. Support has come in the form of arms, aircraft parts, currency, and communication networks.

In Pashtun country
Article Abstract:
The intransigence of Afghanistan's mujahideen groups to cooperate with the interim government of Pres Sibghatullah Mujadedi is threatening the already precarious peace in the country. While Mujadedi and Tajik Prime Minister Ahmad Shah Masud campaign to gain the support of Pashtun commanders, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hizbe Islami group engages in guerilla activities, including strategic reinforcement and hijacking. Compounding the problem is the complicity of Jalalabad's army and police with the mujahideen.

Surprise showing
Article Abstract:
Taliban forces have taken opposing Afghanistan military groups by surprise in an unexpected offensive against Tajik and Uzbek strongholds in the north of the country. Their actions may result in them regaining control over the whole country. International aid groups, anxious about Afghanistan's very poor economy, object to the Taliban's extreme Islamic rule which dictates that females can not work or go to school.
