Deprived of air: foreign powers wary over fighter sales
Article Abstract:
The arms deal between China and Russia which resulted in the sale of high-powered fighter aircraft to the former has made Taiwanese officials nervous and concerned. US action on the apparent arms imbalance is being awaited by Taiwan, more so, since air defence is vital in a conflict between it and China. Furthermore, Taiwan has been asking the US to provide it with powerful aircraft for a long time. Major Western powers appear hesitant in selling advanced aircraft to Taiwan since an elaborate tangle of economic relations with either China or the US can be sacrificed.

Losing sleep
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable concern in Taiwan about the possibility of the US establishing closer relations with China. However, it seems reasonable to assume that the US will not change its policy towards Taiwan, at least for the time being. Most importantly, leading US officials believe that a policy that in practice recognizes two Chinas is in the best interests of the US. Furthermore, public opinion in the US is strongly in favour of democracy in Taiwan.

Journey to the West
Article Abstract:
President of Taiwan Lee Teng-hui's visit to the US in June 1995 has boosted his standing in Taiwan, where he will announce in July his plans regarding the next presidential election. Lee's supporters in Taiwan see his visit to the US as a sign that the US would support another term. Critics, however, fear that Lee's visit will do nothing but make more problematic Taiwan's relations with China.
