A new realism
Article Abstract:
Canada exports fish, minerals and timber, but manufacturing and services are important, and much of the population lives near the border with the US. Foreign trade is important for the economy. There is a need for workplace and economic reforms in order for productivity to be boosted, and the weaknesses of the Canadian dollar has meant that the difference between Canadian and US productivity has been less damaging than it could have been. Exports to the US have increased, with manufactured goods accounting for some half of the rise since 1989.

Holding its own
Article Abstract:
Canadians are concerned about high taxes and the brain drain to the US, while the Canadian dollar has dropped in value, and there is fear of the possible consequences if Quebec decides to secede. There is support for public funds for the health and education systems, though taxes are higher than in the US. Canada is performing well in terms of the world economy, the cost of living is low, there is cheap housing, and schooling and health care are good. Canada is also rated a safe place to live and is less aggressive than the US.
