A new term, a new team
Article Abstract:
Changes in membership of the British Cabinet have mixed implications for architects. The appointment of John Patten as Education Secretary is welcomed as Patten supports the retaining of a five-year course for architectural education. Michael Howard, appointed to the Department of the Environment, is feared because of his support for compulsory competitive tendering, opposed by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Little change is expected in housing policy. Architects will await with interest developments at the heritage ministry under David Mellor.

Redefining the architect
Article Abstract:
Adam Clark has set up his own architectural brokerage firm. He believes architecture can be split into two distinct areas and contracted accordingly. His firm, Halliday Clark, will specialise in contacting developers and winning projects where Clark will undertake the concept design, then contract detailed design work to larger firms while retaining a management role. Clark worked for a large practice for seven years and believes his approach is the best way for architects to maintain their role as designers and project managers.
