A reception area where art and architecture merge
Article Abstract:
The refurbishment of the British Council's foyer has transformed a tired and inefficient space into one which 'lifts the hearts' of all its users. The project, carried out by architects Shillam & Smith with the help of artist Judith Frost, uses natural materials and forms to focus on the celebration and experience of coming into a building. The materials used include Portland stone, flint and beach pebbles. The collaboration of architects, artist and manufacturers has resulted in a design which blurs the distinction between architecture and art.

The need to sell architecture to the man in the street
Article Abstract:
Small architectural practices rely on commissions from individuals who are often ignorant of the work of the architect and merely want drawings made for planning purposes. The moves to deregulate architecture will harm such practices as clients will be able to use non-qualified design consultants. The professional bodies should oppose deregulation and actively promote architecture as a profession to the general public and politicians.
