A river run wild
Article Abstract:
More than 2,000 people have died in China since mid-Jun 1998 as a result of the flooding of the Yangtze river. The floods have affected up to 240 million people in some way, with almost 14 million having been evacuated from their homes. Many people are suffering financial hardship, and the floods are also having a negative impact on China's economy as a whole. The flooding has served to refocus attention on the controversial Three Gorges dam. Supporters of the scheme believe that it will reduce the impact of flooding, while opponents emphasize that it will require the forced resettlement of 1.8 million people.

Big bird, big profit
Article Abstract:
Lu Xi-yuan expects the demand for ostrich meat to grow in China. Lu started with 78 ostriches imported from Zimbabwe and now has 500 of the birds. He describes the meat as tasty, low-fat and nutritious, while admitting that few in China have actually sampled it. Lu's plans are ambitious in spite of the negligible demand for ostrich meat that currently exists. He rents ostriches to breeders, but hopes the meat will be used by fine restaurants in the larger cities and then be introduced into supermarkets.
