Something odd in France
Article Abstract:
France has seen a recovery in economic growth which could rise to between 3.5% and 4.2% for 2000, and this has led to job creation, with unemployment falling to a possible 8.1% by 2001. Consumer confidence is also recoveringFrench macroeconomic management has been sound, though some microeconomic policies have been mistaken. Bureaucracy and high taxes are a problem. France could move toward deregulation and improve its economic performance still more, but there is political disarray, and protests by teachers and students. There is concern that policy could be affected by prime minister, Lionel Jospin's desire to become president.

France's subtle loss
Article Abstract:
French finance minister, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, has resigned following corruption allegations. The allegations and this resignation undermine the credibility of French politicians, and France loses an able politician who has been able to carry out reforms while placating the left with symbolic gestures. Further reforms to the tax system, labor market and pension system are needed, and the loss of Strauss-Kahn makes it more difficult to carry them out.

A sad adieu to Dominique Strauss-Kahn
Article Abstract:
French finance minister, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, has resigned over fraud allegations. His economic policies have been praised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and he was at ease in international politics, able to speak Spanish, English and German. Prime minister, Lionel Jospin, has kept a promise to maintain morality in government. The departure of Strauss-Kahn represents a loss to France, and there is a danger that his economic policies could be threatened.
