NEAR EAST: CARREFOUR'S PROJECTS

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Supply, Carrefour, the French retail group, plans to open a store in Cairo. At present, the British retailer Sainsbury is the only foreign retailer in Egypt. The Carrefour group also plans to open a store at Beirut in Lebanon, where negotiations are being carried out concerning the purchase of land. Beirut already has the Monoprix and BHV retail chains in the city.

France: Cora stores to be expanded
Article Abstract:
The Cora retail group has begun work on the extension of its centre at Lempdes, in the Puy-de-Dome departement, and it has obtained authorisation for three other expansions. The centre north of Rheims will be expanded by 1,800 square metres; in the Haut-Rhine departement the Wittenheim shopping arcade will be expanded by 2,980 square metres and the hypermarket will be extended by 350 square metres for an investment of EUR 22.87mn; and at Strasbourg the hypermarket will be extended by 980 square metres, and the shopping arcade will be expanded by 3,800 square metres.

France: Limoges Intermarche innovates
Article Abstract:
The Ventadour Intermarche at Limoges reopened at the beginning of 2000 with 3,500 square metres instead of 1,700 square metres of sales space, and became a hypermarket for an investment of FFr 60mn and 14 months of work. The new store is lighter and new departments have been installed, but the newest thing is the chilled foods department which represents a third of the store's sales space. This department consists of lanes which are lined with shops and a fountain placed in the centre like in a village. The hypermarket employs 90 people and an average of 2,300 customers shop there daily.
