Dusting off William McKinley
Article Abstract:
Comparisons can be made between the campaign for presidency of George W. Bush in 1999 and that of William McKinley in 1896. McKinley sought to appeal to European immigrants, just as Bush aims to appeal to Latinos. Bush also aims for the Republicans to represent the new economy, as happened with McKinley. The US is undergoing a rise in immigration, and well as a period of economic change. There are also differences between the campaigns of 1896 and 1999, with the 1896 campaign having an air of crisis not apparent in 1999.

Khatami is aware that he cannot carry out reforms without allies, so the alliance with Khamenei is important for his political survival, and reform measures have needed Khamenei's backing. Khatami has had to compromise in order to retain Khamenei's backing, but he has been able to make major changes in Iranian politics.
