A taste of adventure
Article Abstract:
European colonization of the remainder of the world took place alongside the developing of commerce, and in particular of the spice trade. Indian pepper growers may seem like simple marginal farmers, yet they can give sophisticated analyses of the world pepper market. Portugal and Spain competed in this trade and in exploration. The Dutch East India Corporation came to be the biggest world corporation by 1670. Spices came to be grown in new locations, and competition increased along trade routes.

They came, they went away
Article Abstract:
A number of empires have appeared and disappeared between 1000 and 2000, with the short life of European empires contrasting with the 1,650 years of the Roman empire, counting to when Constantinople fell. The Chinese and Arab-Islamic empires were also long lived Spain and Portugal developed large empires which lasted only a few hundred years. Commercial reasons only partly explain European imperialism, which was linked to the desire of Europeans to make money in colonies with European protection.
