A taste of partnership for EBRD
Article Abstract:
A $100 million equity facility has been established by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as a financial cooperation deal with Groupe Danone of France. Danone will receive financing for projects on a partnership basis. The EBRD is interested in projects aimed at enhancing the availability and quality of drinks and food in the former Soviet Union and eastern and central Europe. The EBRD will consider similiar deals with other companies in industries where there is little corporate credit risk.

Pfizer changing direction
Article Abstract:
Pfizer of the US, a pharmaceuticals company, is seeking the help of Lazard Freres of the US, an investment bank, in the sale of its food science business. Pfizer is also seeking to acquire a consumer products company. The company's food science business has had low margins compared to other company assets. Possible acquirors could be International Flavours and Fragrance, Bush Bloak Allen and Tastemaster.

Grand Metropolitan, UK food and drinks concern, believe that its new cooperation deal with Russian concern VAO Soyuzplodoimport (SPI), which owns the Stolichnaya trademark, will allow it to move into a new market, balancing out maturing markets in the US and Europe. The two concerns will invest in joint ventures for manufacturing and marketing food and drinks brands to be sold in Russia and abroad.
