The feminist missionary
Article Abstract:
The ideology of Western feminism creates social conflicts when it is applied to Third World countries. In India it has failed as a liberating force and instead clouded issues and advocated harmful tactics. A major problem with Western feminism in Third World countries is that it is dependent upon Western financial aid and has aspirations that are directed to Western rather than Eastern cultures. Societies like India are fundamentally different from those in the West and do not embrace individualism that estranges women from their families and communities.

Japan's faithful under threat
Article Abstract:
In the wake of the Aum Shinrikyo gas attacks Japan's govt is promulgating laws that will dangerously reduce religious freedom. On the ominous day of Dec 8, 1995, parliament's upper house passed a Religious Corporation Law, and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) members want a Fundamental Law of Religion that would permit restricting almost any sort of organized religious activity. This presages a return to social purging of nonconformist elements, in this case any who do not follow the LDP's secular line.

Prophet motive: missionary zeal and marketing savvy spawn a host of new religions in Japan
Article Abstract:
New religions are booming in Japan thanks to a savvy combination of marketing and missionary zeal. Though only 30% of Japan's 125 million people practice a religion, the country boasts 200,000 of them, mostly founded in the past century. Established new religions include Tenrikyo, Soka Gakkai, and Omotokyo, mostly sects of Buddhism or Shinto. Many founded in the 1980s, however, are more vital and independent; they include Aum Shinrikyo, Agonshu, and Kofuko-no-Kagaku. The latter is closely examined.
