A tiger or a dodo?
Article Abstract:
India has undergone some economic reform, but there is still a need for further progress. Power failures and restrictive labor laws create problems for companies. The government plans to carry out more reforms and boost economic growth, and the new parliamentary session, starting on Nov 29 1999, offers an opportunity to begin the task. There is a need to tackle the problem of fiscal deficits and to reduce the number of bureaucrats. Privatization of banks would help the economy, and there is a need for realistic electricity prices, a move which has to be carried out by the state governments.
