A way out: Indonesia offers autonomy to East Timor
Article Abstract:
It is worth looking seriously at Indonesia's offer of limited independence for East Timor. This would involve East Timor gaining full governance, apart from issues relating to defence, foreign relations and some economic matters. Indonesia's brutality towards East Timor cannot be excused, but it must also be remembered that Indonesia has had some positive effects on East Timor. Consideration must also be given to the fact that full independence may not necessarily be the right move for East Timor, particularly in terms of its economy.
