A woman's place
Article Abstract:
Three beauty pageant winners in Malaysia were arrested by Islamic officials and charged with indecent dressing because they paraded in bathing costumes. The Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, raised objections but he was criticised by Muslim religious leaders. The Prime Minister's daughter argued that the incident highlights the repression of women by Islamic leaders who want to make a stand against reform and, in so doing, increase their own power and control over women's lives. Mahathir believes that Islamic piety is preventing Malaysia from addressing more important economic issues.

Wages of war: a force that shaped Asia - for better or worse
Article Abstract:
The US involvement in the Vietnam War fueled the economies of many East Asian nations and had other repercussions throughout the region. Japan was little affected politically but its regional trade soared and Honda and Sony reaped vast profits. Taiwan did not send troops, but developed an infrastructure and trained technicians to support the effort. The Philippines may have gotten the most from the war spending, but suffered as well. Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea were all affected, and every country learned to fend for itself.
