A picture of health
Article Abstract:
Architect, Peter Scher addressed a conference on the relationship between health care and enviroment. Scher is visiting research fellow at Arts for Health, which organised the conference and believes there is a direct link between the effectiveness of health care and its surroundings. Scher called for research into the effects of decorations, perceptions of buildings and general surroundings on recovery rates. He emphasised the dichotomy between the need for meeting the cost and functional requirements of the National Health Service and the views of the patients when designing hospitals.

Design for the Peto method
Article Abstract:
Britain's first purpose-built centre for conductive education presented design problems for the architects. The centre, to be built in Birmingham, England, will use methods derived from the Peto Institute in Budapest to help adults and children with motor disorders. Architects Norman + Dawbarn could not use the Peto Institute itself for a design model as its building is inflexible. The two-storey building is to be divided into blocks built in phases which will allow design modification and prevent an institutional feel. International standards for disabled access are incorporated.
