ALL GEARS UP TO BEAT SLUMP, EXPAND INFRASTRUCTURE

Ashok Leyland Ltd (ALL), a leading automobile manufacturing company, plans to take up a host of strategic measures to face the challenges in the recession-hit automobile industry. The truck market in India has a 10 to 15 percent surplus capacity. ALL plans to improve its market share with aggressive marketing and by widening its infrastructure. In the MDV segment, ALL has achieved an all-time high market share of 32.8 percent in 1997- 98. During the first quarter of 1998-99, its market share has further risen to 38 percent. Its exports in 1997-98 registered a 40 percent rise to 2,150 vehicles. (gs)

MINT TRIAL PRODUCTION SET TO BEGIN
Article Abstract:
Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco), a commercial vehicles producer, will start trial production of Mint, its small car, at its Pune plant in the next few days. It proposes to manufacture 400 cars and 50 prototypes during August 1998. Teclo plans to start commercial production of Mint from October 1998. It plans to produce quite a number of petrol and diesel version cars before introducing Mint in November or December 1998. It proposes to introduce 30,000 cars during 1998-99, and achieve a production capacity of 60,000 cars by the year 2000. (ag)
