NR GROWERS CAN DRIVE TO PROSPERITY ON RUBBERISED ROADS
Article Abstract:
The Union ministry of surface transport is considering the proposal put forward by experts to rubberise highways to avert an impending supply-demand mis-match in natural rubber. The decline in prices of natural rubber does not show any signs of reversal while inventory has been increasing due to lower offtake by the consuming industry. The Rubber Board says that production of natural rubber will touch 6.10 lakh tonnes in 1998-99 while domestic consumption is likely to 5.84 lakh tonnes. Experts say that rubberising roads would cost 35 percent more than bitumen but it would be economical in the long term due to minimum maintenance and longer life. (khr)

AN ELASTIC FUTURE

Indian rubber growers have got a temporary respite against falling international prices due the declining rupee and the special additional customs duty. (khr)
