AN AC IN JAPANESE, ANYONE?: STRATEGIES

Hitachi Ltd of Japan has decided to introduce its own brand of air-conditioners in the Indian market. It has a technical collaboration with Amtrex of Sanjay Lalbhai group of Ahmedabad for the past eight years for air-conditioners. Hitachi plans to invest Rs16 crore in Amtrex by acquiring preferential shares. Hitachi's holding in Amtrex will equal the Lalbhai group's holding. Both will have a stake of 32.2 percent each in Amtrex's equity of Rs14.7 crore. Amtrex is likely to be renamed as Amtrex Hitachi Appliances Ltd (AHAL). The board will have representatives from both Hitachi and the Lalbhai group. Hitachi plans to concentrate on package and room air-conditioners. Amtrex has 10 percent market share in this sector which is expected to increase to 20 percent. Hitachi will introduce other products under its brand at a later stage. AHAL will sell both Amtrex and Hitachi brands. It will focus on debottlenecking its manufacturing facilities and improving infrastructure. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has recently launched a 25 hp blue tractor model-Mahindra 255-DI in Haryana. Its other tractors are red in colour. It has started a four phase campaign for marketing the tractor. It has presented the tractor as a political candidate in Haryana to attract small farmers. The model offers features of a higher hp tractor. It is priced 10 percent higher than other brands at Rs197,000. The tractor has been introduced in Haryana as the state has a large concentration of 25 hp tractors. (rk)(vr)
