Webvan IPO to stir grocery industry
Article Abstract:
Foster City, Calif.-based Webvan lost $35 million the first half of 1999 and analysts expect it to ring up less than $12 million in sales in 2000, yet the Internet-only grocer with free delivery had a market value of $8 billion its first week as a public company. That is almost half the capitalization of Safeway and Kroger. Most grocers are not pursuing the Internet angle with any vigor, if at all; however, there is one grocer that is, Hannaford Bros. Co., in the Boston area.
