AOL to invest in satellite Internet effort
Article Abstract:
America Online Inc. (AOL) announced that it will make a cash investment of $1.5 billion (1.44 billion euros) in Hughes Electronics Corp. The investment is designed to promote the satellite delivery of services on the Internet. The investment also reflects the increasing interest in satellites as a competitor to cable modem services from cable operators. Hughes stated that it will utilize a great deal of the investment for the subsidizing of satellite equipment and customer installation costs.
