AT&T-BT alliance will face a crowd of unlikely rivals
Article Abstract:
AT&T Corp.'s alliance with British Telecommunications PLC will face competition with companies that are not normally regarded as phone service providers, including US computer makers Hewlett-Packard Co. and International Business Machines Corp. Multinationals often ignore traditional phone companies, such as Global One and Concert, and handing out lucrative contracts to startups, as illustrated when Xerox Corp. chose Dutch firm Equant NV to handle its telecommunications accounts. Nontraditional carriers such as IBM and Equant expressed confidence that they can beat traditional carriers because, for one thing, they own almost the entire length of their networks, ensuring clients receive hassle-free, seamless transmissions.
