AUSTRALIA: RAILROAD PROJECTS IN COMING YEARS
Article Abstract:
French companies appear to be very interested in two Australian railroad projects: the construction of a freight railroad line between Darwin and Alice Springs. The cost of this project is evaluated at AU$ 1.2bn (mixed public and private financing). The second project concerns the construction of a 24-kilometre underground railroad line between Paramatta and Chatswood in the suburbs of Sydney. The French group Bouygues appears to be interested in this project which has a cost evaluated at AU$ 1.4bn (public financing). The Speedrail consortium, of which Alstom is a participant, expects to receive around AU$ 1.5bn in aid from the Australian federal government, as well as AU$ 320mn from the New South Wales government to complete the financing for the high speed rail line between Sydney and Canberra.

SOUTH KOREA: SEOUL-PUSAN TGV PROJECT
Article Abstract:
Alstom, the French group, and Korea Highspeed Railway Corporation (KHRC) the Korean company, signed a contract for the construction of the KTX, a TGV high speed railroad between Seoul and Pusan, in 1994. This train, which carried out its first tests in December 1999, is to go into service on this line in March 2004. Two thirds of this line is a new line. Several French subcontractors have participated in this high speed railroad. The 400-metre long train (twice as long as the French TGV) is expected to transport 60mn passengers in six months. A big US$ 100mn investment fund, consisting of the Quebec Deposit Fund, and Korean banks is being set up in order to link the railroad network of South Korea with that of North Korea.
