AUSTRIA: ACCIDENT STOPS MOUNTAIN TRAINS
Article Abstract:
Austria's Transport Ministry has stopped the operation of the country's other 5 funicular railways that pass through tunnels, after at least 159 people lost their lives in a fire of such a train in Kaprun. The ground funicular systems are to undergo a technical investigation on 15 November 2000. The 3,178 ski lifts and funicular railways of 255 operators in Austria carry about 550mn passengers per year, generating a turnover of about Sch 10bn. The facilities provide employment for close to 15,000 people in winter and about 5,000 in the summer season. The operators of the lifts and mountain railways make investments of just under Sch 4bn per year on average, mainly in modernisation measures. The cablecar and cableway systems have to under go a TUV technical inspection every five years and an internal inspection once a year. The Austrian National Tourist Office (Osterreich Werbung) and the tourism authority of Salzburg are planning measures to prevent a collapse of tourism as a result of the accident. Earlier on Osterreich Werbung had forecast a 4-7% growth in turnover from winter tourism in 2000/2001.
