AUSTRIA: BOHLER-UDDEHOLM PLANNING ACQUISITIONS
Article Abstract:
The head of Austrian-Swedish Bohler-Uddeholm, Claus Raidl, says that the company is to strengthen its core business of long products by acquiring a US company that is quoted on the stock exchange. In the field of forging technology, talks are being held about the acquisition of a company that is active in the US and UK. Talks about the acquisition of Edelstahlwerke Witten Krefeld (EWK) in Germany are to be concluded by the end of 1999. On the other hand, a new partner is to be sought for the welding technology joint venture with Thyssen of Germany. Alternatively, Bohler-Uddeholm might give up this unlucrative arm. Following the failure of acquisition talks in Poland and South Korea, Bohler-Uddeholm is to concentrate on western Europe. Bohler-Uddeholm is seeking cost cuts of about Sch 300mn in 1999. This involves the loss of 300 jobs in Sweden.
