AUSTRIA: TELEKOM PUBLISHES NEW RATES
Article Abstract:
Telekom Austria (TA) has published the new call rates that will come to force on 1 September 1999. The structure of call rates will become less complex, and most rates will fall, with the average price cut being 30%. On the other hand, TA is to raise the monthly subscription. Customers will still have a choice of four different tariff models. There will only be two regional zones in domestic calls, with 50 km being the limit in distance. There will only be two rather than four time zones: One for 8.00-18.00 hours and one for 18.00 to 8.00 hours, weekends and holidays. According to TA, the company will lose income of about Sch 1.5bn annually due to the new tariff structure, or 5.55% of turnover. In year 2000 TA is to start calculating call charges by the second. According to director general Werner Kasztler, TA has lost 8% of its market share to private competitors. He expects the figure to rise to 12% by the end of 1999 and to 30% at most in the next three years.

AUSTRIA: ANOTHER ROUND IN CALL PRICE WAR
Article Abstract:
Max.plus and UTA are expected to follow the example of Tele2 and reduce the price of calls in fixed-line networks within Austria to Sch 0.85 per minute. Currently Max.plus and UTA are charging Sch 0.88. While the three belong to those fixed-line telephony providers who bet on flat rates, others differentiate between two regional zones for calls within Austria and two different rates depending on the time of the day. Among such companies, Millennium Communication Network (MCN) is now offering calls within Austria for Sch 0.60 per minute outside business hours. This is currently the cheapest rate in Austrian fixed-line telephony.
