AUSTRIA: CHAMPAGNE FROM PERRIER
Article Abstract:
The French Chalons-sur-Marne-based champagne producer Joseph Perrier is re-entering the Austrian market after an absence of three years. It is now cooperating with Rudolf Holzmann Gastro as the general importer. Initially the French company aims at a market share of 1% and is hoping to increase sales by 5-10% in the coming years. Perrier champagne will be sold through wine bars and restaurants in Austria. In the past ten years champagne consumption in Austria has doubled to about 818,000 bottles worth Sch 154mn per year. Per capita consumption is about 0.1 bottles per year. Ulrich Steinleitner, managing director of Rudolf Holzmann Gastro, expects sales to grow by 11-12% in 1999, compared with 10% annually in the past. According to Mr Steinleitner there is a trend towards higher qualities, and champagne is gaining ground from other sparkling wines. Altogether about 2bn bottles of sparkling wine are consumed annually in Austria. Joseph Perrier produces about 800,000 bottles of champagne per year and expects a turnover of FFr 60mn in 1999, up from just under FFr 50mn in 1998. Exports account for about 60% of sales and go mainly to the UK, Belgium, US, Switzerland, Germany, Australia and Japan.

While restaurants and bars are not planning to cut alcohol prices as a result of the ruling, retailers such as Adeg, BML (Billa, Merkur, Mondo) and Spar have announced that the prices will be reduced in the near future.
