AUSTRIA: CHILDREN'S SPENDING HABITS

According to a poll by the market research institute Imab Promena and the LK-Handelszeitung trade journal among 954 Austrians of 7-18 years of age, children of 7-12 years have Sch 80 pocket money per month on average, while the 13-18-year-olds have about Sch 507. Among the younger age group, 66% of the pocket money is saved and in the older one 38%. 61% of children of 7-12 years of age spend pocket money on sweets, 47% on gifts, 36% magazines and comics, 36% music, and 34% toys. About 67% youngsters of 13-18 years of age spend pocket money on music, 66% on going out, 57% gifts, 53% on hobbies and 49% clothing and shoes. 77% of those interviewed said that they hate advertising.

AUSTRIA: IMMIGRATION TO BE CURBED IN 2002
Article Abstract:
The Austrian government has decided upon a slight reduction of the number of work permits to immigrants in 2002. Within the total of 8,280 permits (8,518 in 2001), the quota for the immigration of family members of foreigners already working in Austria was kept unchanged at 5,490. The quota for highly skilled staff was raised from 1,613 to 2,400. Additional quotas for highly skilled workers may be granted in bilateral talks with Eastern countries seeking European Union membership.
