AUSTRIA: SUBSIDIES FOR CHIP FACTORY
Article Abstract:
The Austrian state of Styria is to subsidise a new chip factory in Unterpremstatten with altogether Sch 210mn. The factory of Austria Mikro Systems (AMS) is to cost Sch 4bn. The company is hoping to get a total of Sch 800mn in subsidies from the state, the Austrian government and the European Union. In addition, bank loans of about Sch 2bn would be necessary. The company has not yet made a final decision on the large investment. At present, AMS employs 690 people and has a turnover of Sch 1.2bn. The investment in state-of-the-art technology and new capacity is necessary in order to increase profitability.

AUSTRIA: ROAD TUNNEL PLANNED IN LECH
Article Abstract:
Austria's finance ministry has granted permission for detailed planning of a road tunnel that would secure a road link to Lech throughout the year. The ski resort was cut off from the rest of Austria for weeks last winter due to avalanche risk, while landslides are a threat in summer. The construction of the 6-km tunnel is estimated to cost Sch 1.2bn. The planning is expected to take about 12 months.
