AUSTRIA: CONSTRUCTION GROWTH TO SLOW DOWN
Article Abstract:
The construction research institute FGW predicts the turnover of the construction sector in Austria to grow 4.7% in 2000 and 2.3% to Sch 238.7bn in 2001. Building construction is forecast to increase 2.3% to Sch 86.7bn in 2001, civil engineering 2.2% to Sch 50.2bn and ancillary building services 2.1% to Sch 101.8bn. The FGW forecast is more positive than that of Wifo, the Austrian Institute for Economic Forecasting. The latter is more pessimistic especially as regards civil engineering. According to president Horst Pochacker, the Austrian construction sector association Vibo is less concerned about volumes than about profitability. He points out that since 1996 prices in civil engineering have increased by no more than 1.6%, while collective settlements have raised wages by 6.5%.
