AUSTRIA: COSTS OF FIGHT AGAINST BSE
Article Abstract:
The Austrian government has announced an agreement with state governments concerning the sharing of costs of preventing BSE. About 65,000 heads of cattle in Austria have been tested for BSE since the beginning of 2001, with no case of BSE detected. The government estimates the costs at Sch 700mn, of which Sch 200mn is carried by the Austrian government, while Sch 250mn comes from the so-called catastrophe fund. Of this amount, the federal government will contribute 60% and the state governments 40%. The remaining Sch 250mn should come from the introduction or raising of fees at slaughterhouses and carcass handling facilities and from BSE tests. Some heads of regional states have protested against the division of the costs, saying that they have not been consulted.
