AUSTRIA: FAST INTERNET ACCESS WITH ONE, NOKIA

In cooperation with Nokia, One will be introducing High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) transmission for internet access with mobile phones in autumn 1999. One will be the first company in Austria and one of the first five in Europe to provide the service that allows transmissions of up to 115 kbps. In the fourth quarter of 2000 One is to offer General Packet Radio System (General Packed Radio Service (GPRS). By the end of August 1999 One had gained 300,000 clients, of whom 30,000 use fixed-line telephony. The company claims a market share of 6%. On 1 September 1999 One is reducing call prices for business clients. Calls from One's portable phones to the fixed-line network throughout Austria throughout the day then cost Sch 1 per minute.

Storm Telecommunications, a joint venture of Telenor of Norway and IXC of the US, is to start offering international telephone calls in Austria in autumn 1999. Storm has signed a cooperation agreement with One , in which Telenor holds a 17% stake.

Mobilkom Austria is to start testing General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) on 23 November 1999. The commercial launch of the system that allows faster data transmission by mobile radio is scheduled for mid-2000.
