AUSTRIA: FIRST POST AGENCIES TO START

The first post agency in Austria is to become operational on 21 May 2001. Postal services are to be offered in a supermarket in a pilot project. Osterreichische Post is planning a total of 12 to 15 post agencies. The Post spends about Sch 100,000 on computer facilities of the agent. The agent gets a commission for each service provided, for instance Sch 2.50 for a letter. Due to the separate commission for selling stamps, the post agencies will not sell stamps.

AUSTRIA: POST TO TEST NEW STRUCTURE

Osterreichische Post has agreed with trade union representatives on testing the restructuring plan for the post offices on a smaller scale. From the beginning of 2001, 24 post offices will be testing for a period of three months the restructuring plan that in its full extent involves investments of about Sch 1.4bn, cuts from 1,900 to 470 the number of post offices from which letters and parcels are delivered, and makes about 1,000 postmen redundant. The test will investigate the viability of the programme and look at possibilities of reducing the number of jobs by 500 by the end of year 2001.
