AUSTRIA: NEW AGENCY FOR FOOD SAFETY
Article Abstract:
The Austrian government is planning a new agency for food safety. The organisation in the form of a public law company will combine the competence of about 1,000 experts on subjects such as food law, veterinary issues and agricultural materials. It will include also consumer protection representatives. The legislative basis for the new agency is to be created by summer 2001. The government is thus reacting to the first suspected case of BSE in Austria. Agriculture minister Wilhelm Molterer said that animal feeds for ruminants that include animal fats are to be forbidden. Meanwhile meat and bone meal has been detected in a feedstuff sample in Tyrol.
