AUSTRIA: FORECAST FOR MOBILE PHONE SALES

About 3mn mobile phones are likely to be sold in Austria in year 2001, compared with 3.5mn units in 2000. About two-thirds of the phones will be sold to existing users. The sales of WAP and GPRS phones in year 2001 might reach about 2mn units. As consumers are prone to swap also the provider when buying a new phone, the country's four mobile phone operators are making efforts to keep existing customers. This involves costs such as those for offering a new phone at a discounted price. The number of new users of mobile phones in Austria in year 2001 is estimated at 1mn, down from 2mn-2.5mn in 2000. AUSTRIA: TRENDS IN TELECOM/COMPUTER SPENDING

European Information Technology Observatory (EITO) predicts the Austrian market for information and telecommunication technology to grow 11.5% in 1999 and 9.1% to more than EUR 10bn in 2000. Growth in the information technology segment is estimated to be up to 2% slower than in western Europe on average. Telecommunication already accounts for 54% of the Austrian information and communication technology market. Growth in the mobile telephony market in Austria is estimated at 15%, which is 1.5 times the growth rate expected in Germany. Austria is expected to remain among the three fastest-growing mobile telephony markets also in year 2000. In 1999 the number of internet subscriptions in Austria is predicted to increase 38%, which is well over the European average.

AUSTRIA: NEW NOKIA STORE FOR VIENNA

In spring 2001 Aikon Handels GesmbH is to open what is said to become the biggest Nokia store worldwide. The store, which involves an investment of Sch 32mn and has an area of 2,400 sq.m, will sell only Nokia products. It is expected to generate a turnover of Sch 100mn in the first year. The store will be in the new Nokia Business Center in Kagran, the construction of which has just started.
