AUSTRIA: FURTHER DELAY FOR FIGHTER AIRCRAFT?
Article Abstract:
Austria's vice-premier and chairman of the right-wing FPO party, Susanne Riess-Passer has said that the purchase of new interceptor fighters for the Bundesheer may have to be delayed in favour of a tax reform. The purchase of 30 new planes could cost up to Sch 30bn, while the defence ministry's budget amounts to Sch 22bn. The options for the government to resolve the issue of interceptor fighters include a reduction of the number of planes. Die Presse suggests that especially the number of 2-seat training aircraft could be reduced. Current plans involve the purchase of 6 such planes. Alternatively, the government would save money by buying second-hand aircraft or by cooperating with other countries (Czech Republic) in areas such as pilot training and maintenance.

AUSTRIA: STREAMLINING OF ARMED FORCES
Article Abstract:
Austria's defence minister Herbert Scheibner is planning a streamlining of the administration of the armed forces in order to safeguard the military operating capacity of the Bundesheer. The measures include the merging of administrative offices and schools, the reduction of inventories, and cutting back on training manoeuvres. The General Inspector of Troops is to be replaced by a General Chief of Staff, who will have wider authorities. Schneibner holds on to the plan to buy a successor for the Saab-Draken interceptor fighters, whereby economic cooperation will be given priority to compensation deals.
