AUSTRIA/GERMANY: ILLEGAL DRUGS IN PIG FARMING
Article Abstract:
Following joint investigations by the German and Austrian authorities, 131 Austrian pig farms are suspected of having used illegal drugs supplied by German vets. The antibiotics and growth accelerators may cause health damage to consumers. Among those suspected of using illegal drugs is a pig farmer in Lower Austria that uses the quality seal of Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA). About 4,500 of Austria's 82,000 or so pig farmers have been awarded the quality seal of the agricultural marketing organisation. AMA controls at the Lower Austrian farm in September 2000 did not disclose illegal drugs.
