AUSTRIA: INDUSTRY DOES NOT MIND NUCLEAR POWER
Article Abstract:
The origin of electricity is insignificant for 92% of Austrian industrial users, according to a survey by the Joanneum college of Kapfenberg. The businesses would buy electricity anywhere in Europe, also from nuclear power plants. Industrial users would be ready to use alternative energies if they would not have to pay more for them. The decisive factor is price. 71% of businesses are interested in additional services offered by power companies, such as telecoms, interior installation or water supply services. However, according to the survey, most energy suppliers regard their core sector as most important and have not realised the chances of new business sectors. Municipal utility companies are worried about the increasing competition in the power sector. While large electricity suppliers are generally not interested in mergers or strategic alliances with other companies, about one third of municipal utility companies are planning mergers and 73% strategic alliances.

AUSTRIA: ANTI-NUCLEAR OPTION FOR CONSUMERS?
Article Abstract:
According to economics minister Johann Farnleitner, Austria's government parties have agreed that consumers must be given the option not to use electricity produced in nuclear power stations. The power industry doubts whether this option would be technically feasible. Mr Farnleitner, on the other hand, says that in winter, when Austria's hydro power stations cannot produce enough electricity, consumers could choose whether to buy electricity from companies that produce power in Austrian coal power stations or from importers of German nuclear power. This option could give new hope for Austria's coal power stations.
