AUSTRIA: MORE BUT SHORTER HOLIDAY TRIPS
Article Abstract:
Only 50% of Austrians make annually one or more holiday trips of at least three days. Travelling is too expensive for one third of Austrians, and one sixth cannot travel because of their jobs or health conditions. Austrians spend on the average Sch 6,000 on a holiday trip in the home country and Sch 11,000 on a trip abroad. Total spending on holiday trips of at least four nights amounted to Sch 62bn in 1999, of which Sch 15bn was spent in the home country. The number of holiday trips increased by 5.8% in 1999. The number of holidays in the home country grew twice as fast as that of trips abroad. The number of Austrians going on short holidays increased by 12%.

AUSTRIA: OSTERREICH WERBUNG LOSES MEMBERS
Article Abstract:
The Austrian states of Styria and Carinthia are to leave the tourism promotion organisation Osterreich Werbung (OW). The two states contribute about Sch 28mn to OW's annual budget of Sch 583mn. According to Josef Margreiter from Tirol Werbung, OW's existence is not threatened by the loss of the two members. However, the financing structure has to be redefined. At present, the Austrian government accounts for 60% of membership fees, the chamber of commerce 20% and Austrian states 20%.
