AUSTRIA: NEW WORKING TIME RULES FOR TELECOMS
Article Abstract:
Austrian telecom companies have agreed with employees' representatives about a new working time structure. Apart from a pay rise from 1 January 2000 for the 4,500 employees concerned, the agreement entails that weekly working time can be extended from 40 to 45 hours without overtime pay. A specific agreement within the company is then required. The difference to regular 40-hour working week has to be compensated within a period of up to 3 years. This is the longest such period in the history of collective agreements in Austria. The working time beyond the 40 hours per week can be compensated in the form of a sabbatical of up to 6 months. During this period the employee gets his full salary and other benefits. If he uses the sabbatical for further training in the telecoms sector, employer takes over the training costs. According to a spokesman for the GPA trade union, the new working time agreement can serve as a buffer against redundancies when the current boom in the telecoms market calms down. The present agreement does not concern Telekom Austria, which has its own collective agreement.
